May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month (also referred to as "Mental Health Month") has been observed in May in the United States since 1949. The month is observed with media, local events, and film screenings. Mental Health Awareness Month began in the United States in 1949 and was started by the Mental Health America (MHA) organization (then known as the National Association for Mental Health).

Mental Health Facts & Figures

  • 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental illness each year.

  • 1 in 20 U.S. adults experiences serious mental illness each year.

  • 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year.

  • 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24.

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-34.
